Not at 20 microns. Itchiness comes down to fibre diameter, not the fact that a garment is made of wool. Regular wool sits at around 35 microns, and its thicker fibres flex and poke against skin, causing the classic wool 'prickle.' Merino, at roughly half that diameter, bends against skin instead - so it doesn't register as an irritant at all.

What actually causes wool to itch?
It's mechanical, not chemical. Nerve endings in skin register a coarse fibre's tip pressing and flexing against the surface, the same way any stiff bristle would. Thicker fibres are stiffer and resist bending, so they poke rather than lie flat - and that repeated micro-poking is what people describe as itch.
Why does fibre diameter matter more than species?
A fibre's bending stiffness increases sharply with diameter - small increases in micron count produce a disproportionately stiffer fibre. Regular sheep's wool typically measures around 35 microns. Merino, bred specifically for finer fleece, comes in at around 20 microns - fine enough to bend against skin under normal pressure rather than resist and poke. The animal matters less than the number.
Is all 'Merino' the same Micron count?
No, and this is where a lot of "merino" garments quietly disappoint. Merino wool is graded on a spectrum, and some garments labelled merino use coarser grades toward the upper end of the range to cut cost, which brings back some of the prickle finer merino avoids. PureFleece® is made from consistently fine 20-micron fibre, not a blend that drifts toward the itchier end of the scale.
Does PureFleece® need a base Layer Underneath?
Yes - even at 20 Microns PureFleece® is designed to be worn with a T shirt or long sleeved base layer beneath, ideally a finer Merino Jersey at 18 microns or below.
What about Superwash-treated Merino?
Superwash is a chemical process, commonly applied to many brands of Merino to make it machine-washable ans a little softer. But it coats the fibre in a thin layer of plastic resin - most often polyester which means the garment is no longer 100% natural fibre. PureFleece® carries no Superwash finish, so nothing affects the performance of the Merino
